A Day in the Writing Life!

It's my Thursday to share a day in my writing life. So, here goes... (btw, until one of my pets figures out how to take pics - I will be in none - which is fine with me!)

Let's do a weekday... First, I get up - at 5 a.m. *yawn* (be very glad I did not take a picture of me at 5 a.m.!)  I put in my contacts...
   make my tea,
feed the cats     & the dogs...   don't they look patient? Do not be fooled!

Then I get ready for work & after that, I settle down to write - here on my loveseat...

However, I must first contend with this --->

Mr. Cattingham is, more often than not, of the opinion that anything horizontal requires his butt to be on it, especially if someone else has any interest in it!  For some unknown reason, lately I've been working on a story in longhand. I really like the feeling of holding a pen and making the words happen organically. (Mr. C obviously likes the feel of sitting on my notebook!) Anyway, my current WIP seems to want to be written that way. We'll see how long that lasts - because when the words start coming fast & furious, I can get a little bit impatient with my fingers!  If I'm lucky, and can get a little kitty cooperation, I get in an hour before I have to leave for work at 7:30.

When I get home, I try to hit the gym for at least 45 minutes (that does not always happen :-/ or do some yard work. But, when I'm done with anything extra-curricular - I'm back to writing (or playing spider solitaire because, well... you know... )

I'd love to write here... at this great desk...      but, it's rarely as clean as this &

(as you've probably guessed...) Mr. Cattingham often takes up residence here.
I'm sure you can tell, he is a formidable cat to move!

So - I end up here, at my table   or back on the couch. (I do love a laptop!)

By the time 9:30 rolls around - I'm ready to hit the hay & stack up a sufficient quantity of Z's in preparation to start all over again the next day.

That's about it. On the weekends, I spend lots more time on the loveseat & get to deal with "A" and Esmerelda demanding lap time - but, that, as they say, is another story...

I love all the darling fur-bearers!!! And the edward gorey inspired Mystery! coffee mug. A must have (I have two) but the double image wears out over the years. Guess that happens after about 10,000 cups of coffee.

They are something (the fur-bearers!) And, my daughter found the mug(s) at a yard sale & got them for me. Mystery! is the only show on TV that I will not miss! :)

Oooh... you have lovely pets!! :)

Also, you get up too early. It scares me. lol
May. 20th, 2010 12:23 pm (UTC)
Thank you! They are lovely, aren't they? :)

And - it scares me to get up that early, too... but, it's the best writing time for me.
May. 20th, 2010 11:47 am (UTC)
That's discipline!
May. 20th, 2010 12:24 pm (UTC)
Usually! :) (there are days when it's hard to drag out of bed, but mostly I manage... O_o )
May. 20th, 2010 11:53 am (UTC)
Is Mr. Cattingham his real name? That's awesome! LOL!
May. 20th, 2010 12:25 pm (UTC)
Yep - Mr. Edward J. Cattingham (the J is just J) He's a lover!
May. 20th, 2010 12:24 pm (UTC)
that cat is ridiculous.

everytime i go back and look at the look on his face there on your desk, i laugh.

May. 20th, 2010 12:26 pm (UTC)
Re: that cat is ridiculous.
LOL! He is pretty ridiculous! When I'm at the computer, he'll get on my lap and sprawl across it - dangling down on either side. He has his "boneless cat" moments!

He makes me laugh - a lot! :^D
May. 20th, 2010 12:32 pm (UTC)
Ah, Mr. Cattingham. I think cats have a special butt-radar that locates writing surfaces and bound paper.
May. 20th, 2010 12:41 pm (UTC)
lol! "butt-radar" - he's definitely got it!
May. 20th, 2010 01:15 pm (UTC)
Boy! You are one dedicated and organized lady. My head hurts.
May. 20th, 2010 02:46 pm (UTC)
Dedicated, yes - Organized, no way! :)
May. 20th, 2010 01:16 pm (UTC)
That's an early morning! And, Mr. C is adorable. I love those stoic 'I know what I want' poses.
May. 20th, 2010 02:48 pm (UTC)
Fortunately I AM a morning person! lol! And, I <3 Mr. C so much - he's an amazing kitty who just happened upon my house one cold October night. I opened the door, in he came & he's never left!
May. 20th, 2010 01:23 pm (UTC)
5 am? That's serious dedication, Julia. Edward J Cattingham, what a great name. Yes, every writer's cat must have butt-radar--for the exact piece of paper (or mousepad) you need at that moment.
May. 20th, 2010 02:49 pm (UTC)
Serious dedication or seriously mental! (I have my days when I wonder which it really is!) Mr. Cattingham has a fan club amongst my friends! & I shall never forget "butt-radar"!
May. 20th, 2010 02:06 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing your day Julia! I have a dog that follows me around and sits with me while I write. Luckily she doesn't sit ON the notebook / laptop. :D

Longhand? ouch! But if it helps the creativity then I say go for it!!!
May. 20th, 2010 02:51 pm (UTC)
Thanks for commenting, Kiki! *hugs* Clint (my little sheltie) lays at my feet, too. He can't stand to be where I am not!

As for the longhand - I have no idea what came over me - but it is really helping this story happen.
May. 20th, 2010 02:26 pm (UTC)
Whew!! What a day! :) Your loveseat looks so comfy. :)

Thanks for giving us a peek into your world. :) Love this feature.
May. 20th, 2010 02:52 pm (UTC)
It does get tiring, Keri! And, I have been known to doze off on that loveseat!

I love this feature, too. I feel like it helps to get to know everyone better!
May. 20th, 2010 03:49 pm (UTC)
Your pets totally look like they know how to wield a camera. Fess up, Julia - who really took the photo of your desk? And Mr. Cattingham looks like he calls the shots! Hee hee.

I love your day - I can't believe you're up at 5. I'm in awe.
May. 20th, 2010 04:44 pm (UTC)
Ha! It would not surprise me in the least if they figured out how to take pics! Mr. C probably titled that desk shot "My lounge!"

May. 20th, 2010 04:03 pm (UTC)
I'm in awe of the 5 a.m. wake-up--and the long-hand writing. Wow! Love the pics, love the pets! Can I join Mr. Cattingham's fan club, too?!
May. 20th, 2010 04:59 pm (UTC)
Aw - thanks! Consider yourself an honorary member of the Mr. Edward J Cattingham Fan Club! (I won't tell him, though... the little squirm has a big enough head as it is! lol!)
May. 20th, 2010 04:19 pm (UTC)
I love Mr. Cattington! And I'm glad to know I'm not the only writer who sometimes reverts to longhand for a first draft. It makes me feel so dinosaur-like and un-techy, but there's something about the flow from brain to hand to pen to page, isn't there?
May. 20th, 2010 05:00 pm (UTC)
Definitely finding my voice with this one by using longhand. It feels like a whole different brain part beng used to noodle out the storyline. I'm lovin' it!
May. 20th, 2010 06:24 pm (UTC)
I can totally relate to your writing obstacles. I have my own version of Mr. Cattington who thinks that a good place to perch is on top of my hands/arms as I am trying to type. Why he thinks this is comfortable I have no idea.
May. 20th, 2010 07:01 pm (UTC)
My kitty "A" is the one who lays across my arms/hands when I'm trying to write. It does not seem to bother him in the least that I keep removing him - he bounces back like a rubber ball!
