Everlasting is available now - and it's fabulous!

Sailing aboard her father’s trade ship is all seventeen-year-old Camille Rowen has ever wanted. But as a girl of society in 1855 San Francisco, her future is set: marry a man she doesn’t love, or condemn herself and her father to poverty. On her final voyage before the wedding, the stormy arms of the Tasman Sea claim her father, and a terrible family secret is revealed. A secret intertwined with a fabled map, the mother Camille has long believed dead, and an ancient stone that wields a dangerous - and alluring - magic. The only person Camille can depend on is Oscar, a handsome young sailor whom she is undeniably drawn to. Torn between trusting her instincts and keeping her promises to her father, Camille embarks on a perilous quest into the Australian wilderness to find the enchanted stone. As she and Oscar elude murderous bushrangers and unravel Camille’s father’s lies, they come closer to making the ultimate decision of who - and what - matters most.

About the Author

Angie Frazier lives in New Hampshire with her husband and two daughters, their big black lab, and a pair of highly destructive cats. Her debut young adult novel, EVERLASTING, is the result of an overactive imagination, an addiction to historical research, and dozens of vintage travel posters plastered to the ceilings of a cottage she rented one long, snowbound winter.
Steph says: From the moment I heard about this book, I couldn't wait to read it. And I leapt at the chance to interview Angie!
EVERLASTING is a historical romance/adventure which includes some supernatural elements. Which part of the book came to you first? The romance, the historical setting, the magic, or...something completely different?
The historical setting and adventure aspects came to me first. I love studying history, and how people lived in other time periods and other countries. It’s never ceased to fascinate me. The romance in EVERLASTING came next, because I couldn’t read a book—or write one—without romance! But I didn’t want just romance. I wanted to explore love between family and friends. Relationships. Unrequited love. All of it, really. The magic element came last, after 6 years of writing and tinkering with the manuscript.
Can you tell us a little bit about Camille, the heroine? What do you love most about her?
The book opens with Camille about to sail for the last time with her sea captain father. She’s also engaged to marry one of her father’s business partners. While she likes Randall a lot, she isn’t sure it will ever blossom into love. She’s a torn character, because she wants to make her father happy, she wants to make herself happy, and accomplishing both of those things is impossible. She’s going to have to sacrifice one or the other. Two of the main themes of the book are choice and sacrifice.
The thing I love most about Camille is her mix of vulnerability and stubbornness. I wanted her to have just the right amount of both qualities to make her a character to root for.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The most difficult part was the research that it required. I had to research everything—from ships and sailing and ocean routes, to period food and clothing and speech, to period maps and building construction and currency. It definitely took the full nine years between beginning the novel and finishing revisions with my editor to do all of the research.
Can you tell us a bit about the writing process you went through with this book? How long did it take? Also, as the mom of two young children, how did you find the time to write?
Well, when I had the “plot revelation” six years into the project, I had just given birth to my second daughter. I have a very vivid memory of sitting at my desk, typing away at the keyboard, and rocking the baby in her car carrier with my foot. Nothing could tear me away from rewriting the book from scratch! But eventually, I started to write at night, after the girls went to bed. That’s how I still work. Late nights, early mornings, and lots of coffee and tea! Now if I could get my hands on a vegan hazelnut brownie... ☺
Vegan hazelnut brownies are THE BEST! Mmmm, now I need to go buy one...but in the meantime, could you quote a favorite paragraph from the book?
So hard! Here’s one with Camille on her first night in the Australian bush:
The fire tuckered out in its own good time, and they scrunched down under their blankets. Camille slumbered in the back of the wagon, her head propped on a sack of beans. Looking up at the sky, the blades of the trees seemed to brush the stars and moon. She dreamed of her mother, trying to animate in her mind the beautiful woman in the oil painting in her father’s study. How had her lips, the perfect brushstrokes, moved when she spoke? What shape teeth did her smile reveal? How had her laugh sounded? So many questions, Camille thought. As she turned onto her side and pulled the blanket up to her chin, a bit of guilt snuck up on her. She wanted the answers, but she wanted the stone and her father more.
EVERLASTING is the first in a YA trilogy, and you've sold a second series for younger readers, the Suzanna Snow mysteries. How do you balance the two series?
I’m really hoping Everlasting will become a trilogy, but right now there are only two books. Working on that ☺ But yes, I also sold a middle grade mystery series to Scholastic and I’m very excited about Suzanna Snow. She and Camille are so very different, and honestly, Suzanna and I connect a lot more! She was much easier to write. They have very different voices so to balance them I have to only be writing one book at a time.
Do you have any advice for the Elevensies as we move toward publication?
My advice would be to always concentrate on the writing. It’s very easy to become distracted by worry: which stores are going to carry your book, how much push you’ll get, how much buzz, Amazon sales rankings, etc... But the most important thing is to just keep writing and looking ahead to the next book.
Thanks so much for visiting the Elevensies, Angie!
