Name: Medeia Sharif

2011 Book Title: The Bestest Ramadan Ever

Publisher: Flux

Release Date: Summer 2011

Your book's synopsis:

Almira Abdul, a Middle Eastern mutt of Syrian and Iranian origins, is fifteen going on sixteen and she’s fasting for Ramadan for the first time ever.  Coinciding with the holy month is her first major crush with a boy named Peter, whom her best friend Lisa also is in love with.  She has a new enemy at school, catty Shakira Malik, a fellow Muslim who trades barbs with everyone.  Her dentist father proclaims that she needs braces.  Along with the hectic month her grandfather, who knocks down mailboxes and garbage cans when parking, is teaching her how to drive in his tank-like car.

The conflicts of having a continuously growling stomach, getting her driver’s license, repelling Shakira, and trying to win Peter prove how challenging the month of Ramadan is for Almira.  THE BESTEST RAMADAN EVER is an honest and humorous look at Almira’s life, her quest to fit in, and how her parents and old-fashioned grandfather clash in their generational differences.

What made you decide to be a writer?

I fell in love with books when I was a tween.  I remember telling one of my 8th grade teachers that I was going to dedicate my first book to her.  So, I was always dreaming of and working towards being a published author.

Favorite books/authors? Stephen King, Clive Barker, Erica Jong, Laurie Halse Anderson, Margaret Atwood, Melissa Marr, and Carolyn Mackler to name a few.

Medeia, Welcome to the Elevensies! Didn't know your name until the first day of kindergarten? I got a visual on that and burst into laughter. How funny! How often did you walk around not answering the teacher! Ha-ha!

Your book sounds very funny. Congrats and looking forward to reading The Bestest Ramadan Ever!

Nice to meet you Medeia! Your book sounds fabulously different and I can't wait to read.

What was your pet name? That's too cute, by the way!

Thanks, Karen. I'm very excited to be with Flux. I love the title of your book. I love paranormal.

Lisa_Laura, I don't know where to begin with the pet names. The ones I remember the most were kitten and chickadee (in Kurdish, not English).

Welcome, Medeia!

And man, I remember my freshman year in the college newspaper, being forced to use a computer mouse and just hating it. I thought, "I'll never use one of these things in my real life. What a waste of time!" Ha!

Hello! Telekinetic powers would be AWESOME! That, and the ability to clean the house with a wink like on 'I Dream of Jeannie'.

Welcome Medeia!

I'm looking forward to your book, as I love learning about different cultures from an organic, natural voice.

I was confused about my name in kindergarden (we had three languages swirling in the house).

I told them I was "Tina Pepo", because I couldn't say my my B's or S's.

Welcome again.

Thank you for the kind comments. Now I don't feel so alone about all my "eccentricities." Also, I've been reading the bios more carefully, and I look forward to the Elevensies' novels. Of course I have to go through the Tenners first, but I can wait. :)

Welcome Medeia! Your book sounds wonderful and I can't wait to hear more!

I also have a draft of a middle grade novel that I wrote in college--it will never see the light of day, thankyouverymuch!

Welcome Medeia! Your book sounds funny and heartwarming. I had the great luck of meeting a writing teacher from India (Uma Krishnaswami) when I first started writing and a number of other writers who are familiar with Ramadan and Holi and many Indian traditions and your story sounds familiar yet exotic at the same time. Can't wait to read it!!
